The Lesser Evil By Genny Lim
Two evils walk hand-in-hand like mirror twins
They are the Never-ending snake that embraces the reptilian brain in the grip of its
greasy coil
The lesser of evils lies
like a decoy, curled up with a subtle grin and seemingly helpless to attract
unsuspecting fish But turn your back and
it will swallow you whole with all its spit and venom
Hernan Cortes conquered
the Tenochtitlan with the
aid of rival Indians who
thought the white-skinned warriors with their arquebuses and iron cannons were
bearded gods sent from one of the thirteen heavens to spare their hearts from the
obsidian knives at the altar of the Templo Mayor
They lost not only their hearts but their kingdoms
to these lesser gods
The fate of Tenochtitlan is the lesson of the lesser evil No good comes of evil
no matter the degree
The lesser the evil
the greater the deception
